Tension in Rivers As Lawmakers Abort Sitting Over Rumour Of Plot to Impeach Speaker.
According to a report by The Punch on Friday, January 16, 2026, drama erupted in the Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday as the scheduled plenary failed to hold.
This sudden development comes amidst swirling rumours of a counter-plot by some lawmakers to impeach the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule.
The House, which currently operates from the legislative quarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, remained deserted despite an earlier adjournment to January 15.
The silence has fueled speculation that the leadership got wind of a rebellion within its ranks.
Just last week, the Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, citing gross misconduct and unauthorized spending. However, the tide appears to be turning.
Between Monday and Wednesday, four key lawmakers—including the Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo—formally withdrew their support for the Governor's removal, calling for peace instead.
A government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, mocked the lawmakers’ indecision, comparing their political maneuvers to a "Nollywood movie."
He suggested the Speaker stayed away because he realized "the hunter had become the hunted."

Beyond the internal cracks, pressure is mounting from external bodies. The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and the Rivers State Elders Forum have intensified efforts to broker peace between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Two female lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh and Emilia Amadi, also appealed for a political solution.
While they blamed the Governor for initial constitutional breaches, they urged their colleagues to prioritize the state's stability over impeachment.
As the Assembly remains in limbo, Rivers residents are left waiting to see if the House will eventually reconvene or if the deepening division will lead to a total legislative collapse.
