2027: Egbona Advocates Issue Based Campaigning

By Ekanem Asuquo

The member representing Abi/Yakurr federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Alex Egbona, has called on political actors to shun dirty campaigns, character assassination and falsehood, urging them to focus on issues and verifiable records.

Egbona, who is the People Democratic Party PDP candidate for Abi Yakurr federal constituency made the call as political campaigns for the 2027 elections commenced, stressing the need for politicians to conduct their activities decently and in accordance with the regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

He said he had been involved in politics for several years and had remained committed to decent and issue based politics, noting that in recent weeks he had concentrated on showcasing his performance record, particularly his achievements during his seven years in the National Assembly.

According to him, his record covers key sectors including health, education, social services, employment, electricity and empowerment, as well as bills and motions he sponsored and moved in the National Assembly.

Egbona urged the electorate to assess him based on his documented achievements and contributions rather than campaign rhetoric.

He said the projects he had embarked upon were verifiable and not “audio projects”, stressing that he had been sincere in presenting his accomplishments to the public.

He challenged other politicians seeking the votes of the people to adopt the same approach by presenting their records, programmes and development plans instead of attacking the character of their opponents.

The lawmaker also cautioned politicians against making false claims and unrealistic promises in an attempt to deceive voters.

He said campaigns should provide an opportunity for contestants to explain how they intend to address the challenges confronting the people and contribute to the development of their communities.

“As we begin campaigns today, let’s be civil and truthful to the people,” Egbona said, warning that falsehood and deceitful claims would eventually be exposed.

He maintained that political competition should not be reduced to attempts to destroy opponents, insisting that politicians should concentrate on issues of development and allow the electorate to make informed choices.

“The game has begun. And I know that we cannot walk alone,” he added, urging political actors and their supporters to embrace responsible and issue based campaigns throughout the electoral process.
