New Boundary Dispute Sparks Violence, Property Destruction Between Akam/Okangha Communities

By Missang AKPET

There is currently ongoing unrest between the people of Okangha Mkpansi and the Akam Community in Ikom Local Government Area.

The unrest, which stemmed from a boundary dispute between the two communities, has left properties in Akam Community destroyed.

As at press time, women from Akam Community are on a peaceful demonstration to the Ikom Area Command in protest of the wanton destruction of properties in their community by the Okangha people.

Speaking with a leader of the women's group, Madam Eugenia Obata, she said the issue has been lingering since 2024 when the Okangha people came and broke down two houses close to the boundary and set their properties ablaze.

"On 14th February 2024, the people of Okangha Mkpansi came and broke two houses close to the boundary belonging to Akam people, claiming that the portion of land where the house was built belongs to Okangha. We ran to the police and reported the case, which they did nothing about.

Last night, February 2, 2026, at around 3 am, the same thing has occurred again, breaking down four houses, making it six in total.

We have marched down to the police station this morning as Akam women and mothers to report to the Area Command to come to our aid and salvage the situation by showing us the boundary between the two villages.

We don't want war; we don't want to fight; we are suing for a peaceful resolution," she said.

As at press time, gunshots were being reported in both communities, with no casualties yet.
