Dr Kwita Dan Obo, new Head of Department, Journalism and Media Studies, University of Calabar has charged pioneer students of the department to embrace diligence, discipline and academic excellence as they embark on their academic journey.

Dr Kwita gave the charge yesterday during a familiarisation meeting held with the pioneer students of Journalism and Media Studies programme at the Mini Theater of Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the new HOD and members of staff to interact with students, outline expectations and share the department's vision for academic and professional development for students.

Addressing the students, Dr Kwita emphasised the importance of being studious and maintaining exemplary conduct in both character and learning while noting that these qualities remain fundamental pathways to success in the journalism profession and beyond.

Also speaking at the meeting, Dr Jude Judex Okoro, an experienced journalist and lecturer in the department, assured students of the department's commitment to equipping them with innovative journalism skills relevant to the demands of the 21st century media environment. He encouraged them to embrace emerging learning opportunities, technological innovations and practical skill acquisition that would position them for success in the industry.

Dr Okoro, who is the Editor-In-Chief (@ Large) of THE BEAGLE NEWS Newspaper further pledged to facilitate hands-on training experiences through classroom based practical sessions and industry engagements aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and professional practice.

Similarly, Mrs Joan Nweke, a lecturer in the department urged the students to uphold good conduct at all times and assured them of her readiness to provide academic guidance and support whenever necessary given that her office remains open and accessible to students.

Other lecturers in the department; Dr Solomon Ugo Solugo Solugo and Mr Okpokiri Peter also encouraged students to sustain a strong commitment to learning as they assert that journalism is a very creative discipline.

They reassured them that the academic staff are fully prepared to impart the essential skills, techniques and professional values required for excellence in journalism and media practice.

The familiarisation meeting highlighted the department's determination to nurture a new generation of media professionals equipped with contemporary knowledge, practical competence and ethical values necessary for success in the evolving communication industry.

Recall that Journalism and Media Studies is one of the newly unbundled programmes under the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Calabar.

The programme which commenced in 2025 has continued to attract growing interest among prospective students and remains available as a course of choice on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) which allows candidates to apply directly for admission into the programme.
