FG Approves Six Year Moratorium on Establishment of Tertiary Institutions
The Federal Government has approved a memo seeking a six-year Moratorium on the establishment of tertiary institutions across the country.
The Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, announced the Federal Government’s approval after the Federal Executive Council meeting which held yesterday, saying that the decision became necessary in order to check the quality of existing tertiary institutions.
The Minister noted that with the approval, there shall be no establishment of new tertiary institutions including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education until after six years and expressed worry over the proliferation of both public and private tertiary institutions within the country and emphasised on the need to help private institutions become financially stable.
Alausa, also stated that with the resolution of issues between Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), and the Federal government, public universities shall attract more students enrolment and shall deliver stable and quality academic content and expressed hope that confidence shall be restored to the nation’s public tertiary institutions.
