Keke Drivers Protest in Calabar, Block Orok Orok Roundabout

Commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as keke drivers, staged a protest in Calabar on Thursday morning, blocking the Orok Orok Roundabout and causing heavy traffic congestion in the area.

The protesting drivers reportedly parked their tricycles across the road, preventing the movement of vehicles and leaving many commuters stranded as motorists struggled to access adjoining routes.

The protest also affected movement along nearby routes, including Goldie, Orok Orok, and Ettagbor. Some of the riders were seen holding placards with inscriptions such as “No More Tickets Till Further Notice” and “Stop the High Ticket Rates.”

One of the protesters who spoke to reporters said the demonstration was triggered by the rising cost of fuel and the activities of the taskforce, which they claimed had made their operations increasingly difficult.

“We are suffering. Fuel is too expensive and the taskforce keeps disturbing us,” the rider said.

As of the time of filing this report, security officials had yet to issue an official statement on the situation, while motorists were advised to seek alternative routes to avoid the affected area.
