C'River: Otu Extends Tenure of TRC Chairman

By Ekanem Asuquo

Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has approved a fresh two year tenure for the Chairman of the Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty Ovai Solomon Osim Edward.

The extension was announced in an official communication issued by the Department of Chieftaincy Affairs, Governor's Office, Calabar, and dated June 23, 2026.

The letter, signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir Frank Edet, said the decision was reached after an assessment of the monarch's stewardship and contributions to the state's traditional institution.

According to the correspondence, Governor Otu "has graciously approved the extension of your tenure as Chairman of the Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council for another two years."

The government noted that the approval was based on the royal father's performance and commitment to the growth of the council.

"This extension is in recognition of your positive track record and contributions to the growth and stability of the Traditional Rulers Council," the letter stated.

The directive also put to rest earlier plans for a leadership transition within the council.

"The earlier announced change of guard in the leadership of the Council is hereby cancelled," the government said, effectively retaining the monarch as head of the state's apex traditional body.

Officials said the extension is expected to promote continuity and stability within the traditional institution while sustaining the council's role in advancing peace, unity and grassroots development across Cross River State.

The governor congratulated the royal father on the renewal of his tenure and expressed confidence in his ability to continue providing purposeful leadership.

"Congratulations on this well deserved extension. We pray for God's guidance, wisdom and strength as you continue to serve humanity and the people of Cross River State," the letter added.

Copies of the correspondence were sent to the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor and other relevant officials for implementation.

The decision means that His Royal Majesty Oval Solomon Osim Edward will continue to lead the Cross River State Traditional Rulers Council for another two years.
