Growing political support is building across Cross River Central Senatorial District as stakeholders, community leaders and constituents have begun rallying behind Senator Eteng Jonas for a second term in office, citing his performance and grassroots engagement as key reasons for their endorsement.

The renewed backing, which has gained momentum in recent weeks, cuts across party lines and reflects what many observers described as a "consolidation of political goodwill ahead of the 2027 general elections."

Speaking with THE BEAGLE NEWS team that went round the Senatorial District to sample opinion, several community leaders commended the senator’s legislative efforts and constituency projects, noting that his representation has brought increased visibility and development to the area.

A community leader in Ikom, who identified himself as Chief Nkim Bassey, said the call for continuity was driven by results. “Senator Eteng Jonas has demonstrated commitment to the people. From empowerment programmes to infrastructure support, we have seen tangible efforts. What we need now is continuity, not disruption,” he said.

Similar sentiments were echoed in Etung and Obubra, where youth groups and local stakeholders expressed confidence in the senator’s ability to build on his current achievements if given another mandate.

A youth leader in Etung, Mr. Daniel Ogar, stated that the senator’s accessibility and engagement with young people have strengthened trust. “He listens, he responds, and he delivers within available resources. For us, that is leadership worth supporting,” he said.

Supporters argue that beyond constituency projects, Senator Jonas has played a visible role in legislative activities at the National Assembly, contributing to debates and policies that impact his constituents and the state at large.

A political analyst in Ikom ,Augustine Bisong, noted that the growing endorsement reflects a broader shift toward performance based politics. “Voters are becoming more interested in track records rather than rhetoric. The support for a second term is largely tied to perceived delivery and accessibility,” he said.

Women groups within the district have also joined the call, highlighting empowerment initiatives and outreach programmes they say have improved livelihoods. Mrs. Grace Omini, a trader in Ugep, remarked, “We have benefited from several interventions. What we want is someone who understands our needs and continues to work with us.”

Despite the growing support, some voices have urged caution, emphasising the need for sustained performance and accountability. A civil society advocate in Obubra noted that while endorsements are important, they must be matched with measurable outcomes. “Support should not be blind. The people must continue to demand transparency and results,” she said..

Political observers note that early endorsements such as this may shape the dynamics of the 2027 senatorial race, positioning Senator Jonas as a strong contender within the district. However, they also point out that the coming months will be critical as other aspirants declare their intentions and political alignments begin to take shape.

For now, the mood across many communities in Cross River Central suggests a growing preference for continuity, with supporters insisting that a second term would allow the senator to consolidate on ongoing initiatives and expand development efforts.

As consultations continue and political activities intensify, the unfolding support for Senator Eteng Jonas underscores a familiar theme in Nigeria’s electoral landscape: the balance between performance, perception, and the enduring influence of grassroots connection.

In response to the calls, Senator Eteng Jonas has maintained that his focus remains on service and delivering democratic dividends to his constituents. Speaking briefly during an interaction with supporters, he expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him.

“I am humbled by the support from my people. My commitment is to continue working for the progress of Cross River Central and to ensure that our voices are heard at the national level,” he said.
