Calabar Explosion: SEMA Demands Clampdown on Fuel Outlets in Residential Areas

The Director General of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Antigha Gill, has called for stricter regulation of petrol stations and gas outlets in residential areas following the recent explosion in Calabar.

Gill, who briefed journalists on the incident and ongoing response efforts, warned that the growing presence of fuel outlets in densely populated neighbourhoods poses serious threats to lives and property.

“Fuel stations located within residential areas increase the risk of fire outbreaks, environmental hazards, and accidents that can lead to severe casualties,” he said.

He described the explosion, which left over 100 persons with varying degrees of burns and destroyed properties including vehicles, as a major regulatory failure.

“This incident is an indictment on relevant agencies. It must serve as a wake up call for stronger enforcement and better coordination to prevent future occurrences,” Gill stated.

The SEMA boss stressed that petrol and gas outlets should be restricted to designated commercial zones, urging developers and property owners to comply strictly with safety standards.

“There must be firm action to stop this dangerous trend. Regulatory authorities must enforce existing laws to protect residents,” he added.

On government intervention, Gill disclosed that Governor Bassey Otu has taken steps to support victims by covering their medical expenses.

“The state government has assumed responsibility for the treatment of over 120 victims. Following our assessment, all affected persons have been moved to government hospitals for proper care,” he said.

He also confirmed that officials from the National Emergency Management Agency have visited the scene to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts.

Gill noted that both agencies are working together to compile a detailed report that will guide further intervention and assistance to victims.

He reiterated SEMA’s commitment to enforcing safety regulations and preventing similar disasters in the state.
