Obubra/Etung Reps Race: Ogar Declares Bid, Describes Leadership as Service

By Judex OKORO

The Managing Director of Goldstar Hotel and Resort, Calabar, Opinch Amba Ogar, has declared his intention to contest the Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives ahead of party primaries.

Ogar, a cocoa merchant from Etung, said his decision to join the race is driven by a passion for service, stressing that leadership is a call to serve the people rather than a position of privilege.

Speaking in an interview shortly after inaugurating his campaign coordinators in Obubra, he said he has been committed to grassroots empowerment since 2015.

“I want to serve my people. Leadership is not about position but a call to service. For years, I have supported widows, orphans and the less privileged through empowerment programmes across communities,” he said.

He added that if elected, he would expand such interventions through skills acquisition, scholarships, farm support and policies that promote trade and local economic growth.

Ogar, who has begun consultations across the constituency, emphasised the importance of engaging directly with the people.

“Politics is about consultation and engagement. As a lawmaker, I will prioritise town hall meetings to understand the needs of my constituents and represent them effectively,” he stated.

On his experience, Ogar noted that although he is new to mainstream politics, he has held several leadership roles at the community level, which he believes have prepared him for higher responsibility.

He declined to directly compare himself with the incumbent lawmaker, Mike Etaba, but expressed confidence in his ability to deliver if given the mandate.

Ogar also addressed concerns about zoning within the constituency, explaining that past political arrangements were influenced by broader considerations at the time.

He used the opportunity to endorse Governor Bassey Otu for a second term, praising his administration’s performance in infrastructure and human capital development.

According to him, “Governor Otu has shown strong leadership and deserves the support of the people in the 2027 elections.”
