UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR AND THE PURPORTED OVER-ADMISSION CRISIS IN THE FACULTY OF DENTISTRY: A CALL FOR CLARITY

Anthony EKPO BASSEY
The University of Calabar, one of Nigeria’s prestigious institutions, has recently found itself in the eye of a storm over an alleged over-admission crisis in its Faculty of Dentistry. The issue, now buzzing like wildfire across social media platforms and in public conversations, calls for a clear and candid response from the university’s management. After all, “he who refuses to answer questions, answers them,” and silence in times like this often speaks louder than words.
Rumours and whispers of an admission crisis have left many prospective students, parents, and stakeholders confused and anxious. It is said that “a lie travels around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes,” and this seems to be the case as unverified claims are rapidly shaping opinions without the university’s side of the story. In such moments, clarity is not only desirable, it is essential to quench the fire of speculation before it turns into an uncontrollable blaze.
The Faculty of Dentistry, a vital arm of the university’s academic body, holds the hopes of many aspiring dental professionals. For these young minds and their families, the prospect of education should be an inspiration of hope, not a field of uncertainty and doubt. “When the roots of a tree begin to decay, it spreads death to the branches,” and in this case, unresolved controversies threaten to erode public trust in the institution’s integrity.
It is high time the University of Calabar management stepped forward to address the matter head-on. To “bite the bullet” and offer transparency will go a long way in calming nerves and restoring confidence. A detailed explanation of the admission process, verification of the claims, and reassurance about the steps taken to uphold fairness and merit would serve as the wind beneath the wings of those affected.
Ignoring or evading the issue will only add fuel to the fire. As the proverb warns, “The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.” Silence can breed mistrust and resentment, leading to a bigger crisis than the one initially faced. It is better to face the music and clear the air than to allow doubts to fester in the dark.
In conclusion, the University of Calabar has a responsibility not only to the students but to the public at large. It is time to put an end to the guessing games and speculation. Let the management speak up, shed light on the admission process in the Faculty of Dentistry, and reassure all stakeholders that merit and transparency remain the cornerstone of their admissions. After all, “clear waters do not fear the moonlight,” and truth, when brought to the surface, always shines brightest.
