Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing Cross River South, has issued a strong call for urgent and decisive action following the abduction of twenty five schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State, describing the incident as a disturbing indictment of Nigeria’s security system.
Addressing his colleagues during Tuesday’s plenary, the senator lamented the growing threat to schoolchildren nationwide, noting that youths who simply seek education, empowerment, and a better future now face grave danger.
According to him, “Children who want to better their lives and contribute to national growth are no longer safe. This situation is completely unacceptable.”
Senator Ekpenyong urged the Senate to adopt a firm resolution compelling security chiefs to reappear before lawmakers, but under stricter conditions. He insisted that the next engagement must include enforceable timelines, measurable performance indicators, and consequences for non compliance.
Beyond the immediate rescue efforts, the senator called for sweeping reforms to strengthen national security architecture. He advocated for legislative updates to address current threats, adequate funding for security agencies, and more rigorous oversight to ensure accountability.
He appealed to the Senate to work in synergy with the federal government to confront banditry and terrorism with renewed vigor, stressing that Nigeria must not allow schools to remain targets for violent criminal groups.
Senator Ekpenyong concluded by urging security agencies to move swiftly, decisively, and collaboratively to safeguard students and restore public confidence in the nation’s security apparatus.
