Protest Erupts in Bekwarra Over Poor Amenities
By Benjamin GBOR
Residents of Bekwarra Local Government Area in Cross River State on Monday staged a peaceful protest to demand improved infrastructure and stronger government presence in the area.
The demonstration, organised by community members, highlighted major challenges confronting the locality, including poor electricity supply, dilapidated roads, lack of functional healthcare facilities, inadequate access to clean water and the absence of viable government owned industries.
Participants said the protest was aimed at drawing the attention of political and traditional leaders to the plight of the people. They emphasised that the action was peaceful and intended to seek solutions rather than create unrest.
The protesters called on key stakeholders, including the Local Government Chairman, the Paramount Ruler, Adah Bekwarra II, the Bekwarra Youth Leader, members of the State House of Assembly, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe and the member representing the area in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Akpanke, to urgently address the issues raised.
One of the protesters who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said residents had consistently voiced their concerns on social media but decided to take their demands directly to leaders through a peaceful demonstration.
He said the people were not protesting out of hostility but were demanding accountability and improved living conditions for Bekwarra communities.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the authorities.
