Pharmacists to Deliberate on Tax Reforms, Drug Hawking at Calabar Summit

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Cross River State Branch, has announced plans to convene its Business Summit 2026, with major focus on the impact of new tax reforms and the growing challenge of drug hawking in the state.
The summit, themed “Tax Reforms: Impact on Community Pharmacy Practice,” is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Marian Hotel, Calabar.
State Chairman of the association, Pharmacist Iyke Okafor, said the summit has become necessary in view of recent fiscal policy changes and their implications for pharmaceutical businesses and healthcare delivery.
He explained that the new tax regime, combined with rising costs of pharmaceutical products, has significantly affected access to affordable medicines while also increasing pressure on community pharmacists.
Okafor also expressed concern over the increasing activities of drug hawkers, who he said sell various medicines, including syrups, tablets, and capsules, in motor parks and public spaces without proper regulation or dosage control.
He warned that such practices pose serious risks to public health, noting that unregulated drug sales have contributed to worsening health conditions among residents.
“We have credible reports that drugs and herbal products sold in motor parks and other public places have worsened health outcomes and increased complications,” he said.
The association further observed that while the new tax reforms introduced relief measures for small businesses, including zero percent corporate tax for enterprises below ₦50 million turnover, the overall cost of pharmaceutical products has continued to rise.
It added that the situation has also created room for the influx of fake and substandard medicines into the market.
According to ACPN, the summit will provide a platform for stakeholders to explore solutions to these challenges, particularly in the areas of taxation, regulation, and drug distribution.
A key session at the event will focus on “Minimizing Tax Liabilities through Documentation and Compliance,” where experts will guide participants on tax thresholds, VAT obligations, digital invoicing, and audit preparedness.
The summit will also address strategies for pharmacists to remain compliant under the new tax regime while sustaining viable business operations.
The summit is expected to attract participants from across Cross River State and will be chaired by the National Chairman of ACPN, Pharm. Chief Ambrose Igwekamm Ezeh.
