Larfarge Africa to Expand Sagamu, Ashaka Plants
By Judex OKORO
Lafarge Africa Plc has announced plans to expand its Sagamu Cement Plant in Ogun State and Ashaka Cement Plant in Gombe State as part of efforts to boost local cement production and deploy modern, energy efficient technologies for greener operations.
The company disclosed this in a notice to the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the investing public, signed by its Company Secretary, Adewunmi Alode.
According to the notice, the expansion projects will involve the installation of dry process plants equipped with preheater kilns, vertical raw mills and roller presses for cement mills, aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Upon completion, the Ashaka Cement Plant is expected to increase production capacity to two million metric tonnes per annum, while the Sagamu Cement Plant will expand to 3.5 million metric tonnes per annum. The development is expected to enhance product availability and improve Lafarge Africa’s ability to serve customers across key markets.
The expansion follows the acquisition of an 83.81 percent stake in Lafarge Africa Plc by Huaxin Building Materials Group last year and underscores the new majority shareholder’s commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructure development.
Speaking on the expansion, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade Akinyemi, said the projects reflect the company’s long term confidence in Nigeria’s growth potential and commitment to supporting the nation’s infrastructure and construction needs.
He explained that the expansion goes beyond capacity growth, noting that it will deliver operational efficiencies, sustainability benefits and value creation for customers and shareholders, while contributing to economic activity and job creation in host communities.
“The expansion of our plants is a strategic investment that reinforces Lafarge Africa’s role in supporting national development. By increasing capacity at our flagship plants, we are strengthening our supply chain, improving our responsiveness to market demand and positioning the business to better support critical sectors such as housing, commercial construction and infrastructure,” he said.
Alade Akinyemi added that the integration of modern production technologies would enhance efficiency, reliability and environmental performance, in line with the company’s commitment to responsible operations.
Lafarge Africa Plc reaffirmed its focus on disciplined execution of the expansion projects and transparent engagement with stakeholders as it continues to invest in strengthening its operations across Nigeria.
Lafarge Africa Plc, now a member of Huaxin Cement Co. Ltd, is listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group and operates cement plants across the South West, North East and South East regions of Nigeria, with a current installed production capacity of 10.5 million metric tonnes per annum.
