Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, has described Carnival Calabar as a testament to resilience and sustained development as the festival celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The governor spoke on Monday during the official flag off of the 20th edition of the carnival at the Millennium Park in Calabar, where he noted that the annual event has expanded into one of Africa’s most prominent cultural and tourism showcases.
Governor Otu attributed the success of the carnival to the vision of former governor Donald Duke, who conceived the initiative, and to the efforts of former governors Liyel Imoke and Ben Ayade, who ensured its continuity and growth over the years. He said the festival has become a defining element of Cross River State’s identity and a key attraction on its tourism calendar.
According to the governor, Carnival Calabar has survived several challenges, including the COVID 19 pandemic, due to the resolve of successive administrations to preserve its cultural relevance and economic value.
He welcomed guests from across Nigeria and the diaspora, assuring them of the state’s hospitality and reiterating the government’s commitment to improving the carnival experience.
Describing the 20th edition as a significant milestone, Governor Otu said it represents two decades of creativity, innovation and steady progress in the state’s tourism sector.
He disclosed that the 2025 carnival would feature vibrant artistic displays, energetic dance performances and creative cultural expressions. He also urged participating bands to fully interpret the theme of the year, “Traces of Time.”
The governor explained that the theme reflects the historical journey and cultural evolution of Cross River State and should be presented in a manner that resonates with both local and international audiences.
Governor Otu expressed confidence that the anniversary celebration would further elevate the global profile of Carnival Calabar and strengthen Cross River State’s position as a leading tourism destination.
