Ishie Clan Hails Otu, Disowns Protest Over SUBEB Chair Change

The Ishie Clan Traditional Council in Calabar has commended Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, for his administration’s developmental strides and for appointing qualified indigenes of the community into key positions in government.
The council, however, condemned the recent protest against the governor’s decision to appoint Mrs. Fidelia Okpo Ene as Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), replacing Elder Esu Effiong Esu, an indigene of the area.
In a press statement issued in Calabar and dated September 27, 2025, jointly signed by the acting head of the clan, His Highness Chief Eta Uso, and the secretary, Ededet Eyoma, the council described the protest as the handiwork of mischief makers seeking to strain the cordial relationship between the community and the state government.
According to the council, the demonstration was orchestrated by non-indigenous elements and a few misguided natives who acted without due consultation with community leaders. It explained that those involved acted solely on their own volition, adding that the principal party, Elder Esu Effiong, had confirmed that he was not part of the protest.
“The Ishie Clan Traditional Council was flabbergasted at the unnecessary and sentimental nature of the protest that accompanied the appointment of a new head of SUBEB,” the statement read. “After interrogating those seen in the viral video, we discovered they acted independently. The council has imposed commensurate penalties on the few identified as indigenes.”
The council reaffirmed its unalloyed loyalty and support for Governor Otu, pledging to stand by his administration to promote peace, development, and progress in the state. It also appealed to the governor to disregard the actions of the protesters and continue his good works for the benefit of the people.
The Ishie Clan further emphasized its commitment to maintaining a harmonious relationship with the state government and assured that it will continue to support policies aimed at advancing the welfare of the people.
