INEC's Rush To Recognise Wike's PDP Convention Evidence It Functions As APC Parastal, Says Utomi
According to a report by Leadership, on Wednesday April 1, 2026, renowned political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has raised concerns over what he described as bias in Nigeria’s electoral system, criticizing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its handling of recent events within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Utomi pointed to INEC’s quick approval of a PDP faction aligned with Nyesom Wike, he said this swift validation shows that the commission is acting in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to him, this undermines the fairness of Nigeria’s democracy.
He argued that INEC’s actions suggest it is functioning like a government agency serving the ruling party rather than an independent electoral body and warned that if such practices continue, the country’s democratic process could face serious setbacks.
The political economist urged citizens to remain alert and actively protect their voting rights and stated that democracy depends on the people exercising their choice freely and fairly at the ballot box.
He stressed that such developments could deepen public distrust in the electoral system, when citizens perceive that elections are biased or manipulated, it threatens the legitimacy of elected officials and the stability of democratic governance.
Utomi highlighted the importance of maintaining impartiality in electoral bodies, independent validation of party conventions and candidate nominations is essential to prevent political manipulation.
Utomi urged both authorities and the public to safeguard democratic institutions, he suggested that the people’s vigilance is key to preventing any erosion of electoral integrity.
“INEC’s rush to validate the Wike-faction PDP convention is evidence that it functions as a parastatal of the APC, and is about to bring democracy to a solid sad end in Nigeria if the people do not arise and take their country back,” he stated.
