Cross River Gov’t Cracks Down on Abandoned Official Vehicles

By Ebi COLLINS
The Cross River State Government has issued a stern directive to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to immediately audit and recover official vehicles abandoned at various mechanic workshops across the state.
The Governor, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, through a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Linus Obogo, on Thursday, expressed serious concern over what he described as an “increasing and unsanctioned” trend among MDAs of neglecting government vehicles, often over minor, repairable faults.
The Governor condemned the practice, calling it a violation of established asset management protocols and a clear display of administrative negligence and fiscal irresponsibility.
“This conduct reflects a disturbing disregard for the principles of accountability, efficiency, and prudent resource management that are central to this administration,” the statement read.
In line with this, all MDAs have been directed to carry out a comprehensive audit of government vehicles under repair or parked at workshops, whether within or outside the state. The audit report is to be submitted to the Office of the Special Adviser on Asset Management and Recovery within three weeks from the date of the directive.
Additionally, the Governor ordered that all such vehicles be promptly repaired and returned to service, warning that any vehicle found idle or abandoned without justifiable cause would be seized by the Department of Asset Management and Recovery and reassigned to agencies in need.
“The State Government will not tolerate further negligence or waste of public assets. Any MDA found culpable will face sanctions in line with civil service rules and relevant regulations,” the statement added.
