UNICAL Promotes 24 Academic Staff to Professorial Cadre

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has announced the promotion of 24 academic staff to the professorial cadre.

Prof. Obi made the announcement during the institution’s 250th Senate Meeting held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. According to her, the promotions include 12 new Professors and 12 Associate Professors, reflecting the University’s continued commitment to academic excellence and staff development.

The newly promoted Associate Professors are Dr. Euphoria Akwiwu of the Department of Haematology, Dr. Innocent Abang of Orthopaedics, Dr. Ekaete Asuquo of Nursing Science, Dr. Ofem Ajah of Computer Science, Dr. Fidelis Unimna of Social Science Education, and Dr. David Alawa of Vocational Education. Others include Dr. Ogri Ushie of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Dr. Costly Mary Erim of Continuing Education, Dr. Eneji Valentine Ogar of Environmental Education, Dr. Ewa Abua of Special Education, Dr. Idiku Friday of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, and Dr. Ernest Ezeh of Ophthalmology.

The newly elevated Professors are Dr. Julie Obulezie of Physics, Dr. Atim Asitok of Microbiology, Dr. Levi Ajah of Human Kinetics, Dr. Isaac Ubi of Educational Foundation, Dr. Ebuara Obule of Educational Management, and Dr. Michael Ushie of Social Work. Also promoted to full Professor are Dr. Godfrey Akpabio of Educational Management, Dr. Abigail Okon of Educational Foundation, Dr. Richard Ukpanukpong of Biochemistry, Dr. Anthony George of Physics, Dr. Alberta Memo of Sociology, and Dr. Stephen Odey, also of Sociology.

The Vice Chancellor, who also chairs the University Senate, commended the various deans, heads of departments, and members of Senate for their unwavering contributions to the growth and stability of the institution.

She expressed her satisfaction with the successful completion of the second semester examinations, marking the end of the 2024/2025 academic session. Prof. Obi noted that the examination period was characterized by peace, order, and discipline, commending the University community for their decorum and professionalism.

“I am particularly pleased with the conduct of the second semester examinations. The calm, orderliness, and discipline exhibited by staff and students are commendable and reflective of the Senate’s dedication to institutional excellence,” she said.

The promotions are seen as a significant milestone in strengthening academic leadership, research capacity, and overall institutional advancement at the University of Calabar.
