Ghana Hold England in Frustrating World Cup Stalemate at Boston Stadium

England’s free-flowing attack from the Croatia win was nowhere to be seen as they were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Ghana side at Boston Stadium.

Thomas Tuchel’s men knew victory would seal a last 32 spot, but they were stifled by Ghana’s deep block and organised defence. England managed just one shot on target in 57 minutes and lived dangerously on the counter, with the game turning into a scrappy, disjointed contest.

*Chances but no breakthrough*

Tuchel introduced Bukayo Saka, whose minutes are being managed due to an Achilles issue, and swapped Jude Bellingham for Morgan Rogers to spark something. Saka forced a sharp save from Ghana keeper Benjamin Asare, while substitute Nico O’Reilly hit the bar and Marc Guehi had a header cleared off the line.

England were also lucky to avoid a late penalty when Ezri Konsa brought down Prince Kwabena Adu in the box without touching the ball.

*Group L still open*

England stay top of Group L, but qualification for the knockout phase must wait until their final group game against Panama.

The difference from the Croatia game was clear: Croatia pressed high and played into England’s hands. Ghana sat deep, gave England possession, and dared them to break them down. Tuchel’s side lacked the X-factor to unlock a stubborn opponent ranked 64th in the world.

“It was, overall, a disappointing display,” and England will need more urgency and creativity against Panama to avoid a nervy finish.
