Calabar Bus Drivers Hail Suspension of Tickets, Task Force Activities
By Inemesit Friday
Bus drivers in Calabar have welcomed the temporary suspension of daily ticket sales and the activities of various task force groups operating across the metropolis, describing the move as a major relief.
The drivers said the suspension has reduced harassment and arbitrary fines allegedly imposed on them during their daily operations.
Innocent Effiong, who plies the Watt Market to 8 Miles route, said the development has allowed drivers to work without fear. He explained that they were previously required to purchase daily tickets for N700 while still facing restrictions on where to pick and drop passengers, with many locations designated as no parking areas.
Another driver, Essien Inyang, recounted an encounter with a task force team. He alleged that he was accused of beating a traffic light along Mayne Avenue despite moving when the signal turned green. According to him, his vehicle was towed and he was asked to pay N70,000 for the alleged offence. He further claimed that his tyres were deflated after payment, describing the experience as distressing.
A driver operating along the Efio Ete to Marian route, who spoke anonymously, expressed doubt over claims that the state government was unaware of the task force operations. He said drivers had endured persistent disturbances on the roads for a long time.
Asido Asido, who plies the Eta Agbor route, thanked the state governor for the intervention. Although he noted that the decision came late, he described it as a significant relief for drivers who had long complained about harassment and extortion.
Another driver, Edem Ita, appealed to the government to permanently disband the task force groups. He said their activities amounted to harassment and tarnished the image of the state. Ita added that many drivers were educated individuals striving to earn a living and urged authorities to find alternative engagements for the affected youths.
BEAGLE NEWS gathered that the state government ordered the temporary suspension following a protest by bus drivers on Thursday which disrupted movement and economic activities in parts of Calabar. The directive includes a halt to the sale of daily tickets and the suspension of task force operations on roads within the metropolis until further notice.
