UNICAL Warns Nursing Students Against Further Protests Over Blocked Portals

The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has warned students against further protests following demonstrations by some students of the Department of Nursing Science over the blockage of their academic portals.

In a memo released on Friday and signed by the Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha, the university disclosed that the affected students were admitted during the 2024/2025 academic session.

According to the memo, the students first staged a protest on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Block, carrying placards to express their displeasure over the restriction placed on their individual portals. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ekaette Enang, addressed the students on behalf of management, explaining the circumstances that led to the decision.

Management stated that the action followed a Senate resolution concerning alleged admission irregularities within the institution. The students were reportedly informed that the blockage of the portals was in line with the Senate’s decision.

However, despite the earlier clarification, the same group of students returned on Friday, February 27, 2026, to protest again over the issue.

The university management described the continued protest as “uncultured” and unbecoming of students in a higher institution. It further emphasised that the administration, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, maintains zero tolerance for admission irregularities.

The memo also warned that any further action capable of disrupting peace on campus would attract disciplinary measures in accordance with Section 5.12.7 of the University of Calabar Students’ Handbook, which addresses illegal gatherings within the institution.
