APC Internal Crisis Deepens As Legacy Members Fear Domination By Defectors
From Abdul SULE (Abuja)
According to report by Vanguard, October 25, 2025, Internal friction is reportedly intensifying within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as long-standing party members resist efforts by recent defectors to gain control of strategic positions ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sources close to the party say veteran members are concerned about what they describe as an infiltration by newcomers, many of whom joined the APC from opposition parties after President Bola Tinubu assumed office.
These founding members fear that the rising influence of defectors could upset the party’s internal balance and dilute its original vision.
According to insiders at the APC National Secretariat, the disputes have grown sharper both nationally and at the state level, particularly in areas where former governors, senators, and other prominent defectors are believed to be positioning themselves for leadership roles. A senior party official, who requested anonymity, emphasized the sentiment among loyalists, noting that while new members are welcome, it is “unfair for people who just joined to start hijacking structures built through years of dedication and sacrifice.”
Reports suggest that several state chapters have begun holding informal meetings to protect the interests of founding members and to ensure upcoming congresses and primaries do not favor recent defectors. While some party figures argue that inclusivity is essential, they insist that the APC’s internal democracy should not be compromised for short-term political advantage.
At the same time, another faction views the influx of new members as a potential advantage that could strengthen the party’s electoral chances in 2027. Political analysts describe the unfolding situation as a delicate “power recalibration,” warning that how the leadership manages the tensions between loyalists and defectors could determine whether the APC emerges more united or further fragmented in the run-up to the next general elections.
