APC CONGRESSES: Ikom Stakeholders Demand Adherence to Dual-Constituency Zoning Arrangement
By Missang AKPET
Concerned stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikom Local Government Area have expressed strong reservations regarding a proposed zoning formula for the Chapter Chairmanship position in Ikom, citing concerns that it may disrupt the existing balance of power within the party.
Rumors has it that there is a direct order from the state governor, Senator Bassey Otu who is the leader of the party in the state to reappoint chapter chairmen in certain Local Government Areas, including Ikom.
In response, party stakeholders have appealed to the Governor to reconsider this decision, emphasizing that it would not only alter the established zoning arrangements but also risk creating unnecessary tension, feelings of marginalization, and political distrust among party faithfuls.
According to them, Ikom Local Government is uniquely structured into two constituencies, which have historically adhered to a well-respected zoning tradition that ensures a balance of power between both constituencies.
This tradition dictates that when the Chapter Chairman of the party hails from Constituency Two, the Local Government Council Chairman is produced from Constituency One, and vice versa, upon the expiration of their tenure cycle.
Stakeholders argue that this understanding is not merely a political convenience, but a tested formula that has preserved harmony within the party, maintained peace, inclusion, and a sense of belonging across Ikom.
Altering this tradition, particularly one that has delivered stability, unity, fairness, and stability over the years, would be ill-advised.
Observably, Constituency 1 currently holds the council chairmanship position, while the chapter chairman of the party hails from Constituency 2.
Therefore, in line with equity, justice, and the long-standing tradition, stakeholders assert that the forthcoming party congress should naturally produce the Chapter Chairman from Constituency One, ensuring that in the next electoral cycle, the Council Chairmanship rotates to Constituency Two, maintaining the balance that the people of Ikom have always respected.
They emphasize that the directive to replace a percentage of Chapter Chairmen across the state should not be interpreted as a justification to disrupt Ikom's internal zoning equilibrium, and they hold the Governor to his words, 'I will not impose any candidate on anyone.'
The stakeholders' appeal is straightforward: allow Ikom to maintain its established arrangement, which has consistently been fair, predictable, and inclusive.
Respecting this zoning tradition is not about individual interests; it is about safeguarding unity, mutual respect, and the collective political future of Ikom, as any attempt to alter this tradition will have far-reaching consequences for the 2027 elections.
