2027: Constituent, Lawmaker’s Aide Trade Words Over Offiono’s Performance

A political disagreement has emerged in Ogoja Yala Federal Constituency of Cross River North, as elder statesman, Chief Ray Ugba Morphy, publicly opposed the re-election of the member representing the area in the House of Representatives, Godwin Offiono.

Morphy, in a post on his verified Facebook page, declared that the lawmaker would not receive his support for another term, citing what he described as poor performance and lack of engagement with constituents since his election in 2023.

He maintained that his position was not personal but based on observable shortcomings, alleging that Offiono failed to adequately engage the electorate both before and after the election. According to him, he had never met the lawmaker despite being a stakeholder in the constituency.

The elder statesman also faulted Offiono for allegedly failing to embark on a thank you tour after his victory, noting that such an initiative would have helped strengthen ties with constituents. He further described the lawmaker’s impact as minimal, claiming there was little evidence of meaningful empowerment or development projects.

Morphy argued that elective office should be earned through service rather than entitlement, insisting that the lawmaker had not demonstrated sufficient performance to justify a return to the National Assembly.

However, an aide to Offiono dismissed the claims, describing them as misleading and inaccurate. The aide accused Morphy of misrepresenting the lawmaker’s record and ignoring several projects executed within the constituency.

He listed ongoing and completed interventions, including road construction, water projects, sanitation facilities in Urban Ward One, and the renovation of Army Day Secondary School.

The aide also refuted allegations that Offiono failed to conduct a thank you tour, stating that the lawmaker had held town hall meetings and engaged constituents across Ogoja and Yala.

On empowerment, the aide highlighted initiatives such as financial support to farmers, distribution of tricycles and motorcycles, and business grants to residents.

While acknowledging Morphy’s right to his political opinion, the aide cautioned against what he described as false claims, adding that many other stakeholders in the constituency remained satisfied with Offiono’s performance.

The exchange reflects rising political tensions in the constituency as debates intensify over the lawmaker’s stewardship and prospects ahead of the next election cycle.
