2027: Govs Oborevwori, Makinde, Yusuf, Otu Direct All political Appointees To Resign Ahead Of Party Primaries.
Ahead of the party primaries, Governors Sheriff Oborevwori, Seyi Makinde, Abba Yusufand Bassey Otu of Delta, Oyo, Kano and Cross River States respectively have directed all political appointees in their administration who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments.
The directive is pursuant to the provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is Delta State in
a statement signed on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, directed all political appointees to resign their appointments on or before March 31, 2026.
The statement clarified that the resignation requirement applies to all categories of political appointees who wish to participate in the forthcoming party primaries or seek nomination for any elective office.
This includes Commissioners, Advisers, Directors-General, Executive Assistants, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, Personal Assistants to the Governor, and all other political appointees in the state.
Affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the office of the SSG no later than March 31, 2026, and hand over their duties to the Permanent Secretaries or the most senior career officers in their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The statement urged all concerned appointees to take note of the directive and ensure strict compliance.
Also governors like Seyi Makinde in Oyo, Abba Yusuf in Kano, and Bassey Otu in Cross River gave similar instructions directing all appointees to resign by March 26, 2026.
They all said that appointees cannot mix government work with campaign work, and anyone interested in politics should step aside to keep things fair and equitable.
Recently, President Bola Tinubu told his ministers and aides that if they want to contest in 2027, they must resign by March 31, 2026. He explained that this is the law and that government positions should not be used as campaign platforms.
