Wike, Naval Officer Clash: Symptom of Institutional Decay - Obi
By Ekanem ASUQUO
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has faulted the recent confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lt. A. M. Yerima, saying it reflects the deepening breakdown of institutional discipline in Nigeria.
In a statement posted on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi expressed dismay over the incident, which has continued to generate reactions across the country. He described it as “a national embarrassment” and “a reminder of how far the nation has strayed from orderly governance.”
“The recent unnecessary altercation between the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer is yet another unfortunate display of institutional disorder in our country,” Obi wrote. “What should have been a simple civic encounter has become a national spectacle, showing how badly our governance culture has deteriorated.”
The former Anambra State governor questioned the growing involvement of security agencies in civil matters, saying it reflects a dangerous blurring of professional boundaries.
“Should the military be engaged in purely civilian issues? Should there not be clear distinctions between administrative authority and security responsibilities?” he asked.
Obi warned that when public officers act beyond their institutional limits, and when security agencies are deployed inappropriately, both governance and public trust suffer.
He urged Nigerian leaders to restore civility, discipline, and respect for due process in public administration, stressing that the culture of impunity must give way to lawful conduct.
“A nation that desires global respect cannot continue to normalise lawlessness. We must uphold the rule of law and rebuild public confidence in our institutions,” he said.
Obi also called on public officials to exercise humility and restraint, adding that true leadership is demonstrated through character, discipline, and respect for institutional norms.
The confrontation between Wike and Lt. Yerima has sparked wide criticism, with many Nigerians describing it as a reflection of the ongoing tension between political authority and security agencies.
