The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State School of Culinary Studies and Hospitality Management along with its governing board.

The bill, sponsored by the member representing Uruan State Constituency, Hon. (Dr.) Itorobong Etim, was passed during plenary on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, following the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Education.

Presenting the committee’s report, the Chairperson, Hon. Kenim Onofiok, explained that the committee received valuable inputs from stakeholders and the general public, which helped refine its recommendations before the final passage of the bill.

After a clause-by-clause consideration, the House approved the bill following a motion moved by Hon. Jerry Otu of Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State Constituency and seconded by Hon. Nsibiet Akata representing Eket State Constituency.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, who presided over the plenary, directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Nsikak-Abasi Orok, to transmit the resolution to the State Executive for necessary implementation.

Speaking shortly after the bill’s passage, Hon. Itorobong Etim expressed joy and appreciation to the Speaker and her colleagues for their support. She said the school, when established, would promote skill acquisition and professional training in the culinary and hospitality sectors.

According to her, the institution will equip Akwa Ibom chefs with global-standard expertise, promote local cuisines, create jobs for unemployed youths, and boost the state’s tourism and economic development.

“This school will not only develop skilled manpower but also open international opportunities for our chefs while showcasing Akwa Ibom’s rich food culture to the world,” she said.

Stakeholders in the state have applauded the passage of the bill, describing it as a visionary move that will position Akwa Ibom as a hub for culinary excellence and hospitality management in Nigeria.
