UNICAL VC Cracks Down on NYSC Mobilization Racketeering

By Ekanem ASUQUO

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has declared zero tolerance for racketeering in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process, warning that any student found engaging in fraudulent practices will face strict disciplinary action.

Prof. Offiong made the declaration during a pre-mobilisation briefing for final-year students and prospective corps members, stressing that attempts to falsify records or manipulate the system will lead to certificate withdrawal and other stringent measures. He added that the university’s result portal has been upgraded to close loopholes previously exploited for fraudulent activities.

The Vice-Chancellor urged students to maintain exemplary conduct and avoid actions that could tarnish the reputation of the university, reminding them that they represent UNICAL wherever they go. He highlighted the institution’s legacy of producing notable alumni who contribute significantly both nationally and internationally.

“Let us collectively work together to preserve the good name of our institution,” Prof. Offiong said.

Earlier, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Eyo Mensah, explained that the briefing aimed to familiarise students with the NYSC mobilisation process. Attendance is compulsory, he noted, as it covers registration procedures, documentation requirements, data reconciliation, and common pitfalls to avoid during the exercise.

The pre-mobilisation session featured presentations on result preparation and the NYSC mobilisation chain by former Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and Director of Result, Prof. Angela Oyo-Ita, and Student Affairs Officer, Mr. Agba Ebenezer Agba, among others.

The Vice-Chancellor’s warning reinforces UNICAL’s commitment to transparency and integrity in the NYSC mobilisation process, ensuring that the exercise remains fair and credible for all eligible students.
