Tinubu Vows to Intensify Fight Against Insecurity, Seeks Support for Vulnerable Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration will not allow insecurity to overshadow efforts aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens, pledging to intensify measures to address security challenges across the country.

The President gave the assurance on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. He disclosed that security concerns featured prominently in discussions during his recent visit to the United Kingdom.

Tinubu said his government was strengthening international partnerships to enhance modern security interventions, noting that he recently held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on equipment and support.

“The next phase of our struggle is the challenge of insecurity in the country. I am making all efforts to ensure we collectively share the joy of victory over tyranny. Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress and prosperity,” he said.

He added that discussions in the United Kingdom focused on security equipment and collaboration, stressing that Nigeria was also engaging other countries for additional support.

The President and First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, had returned on Friday from a three-day state visit to the United Kingdom, where they were hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Tinubu also met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer before returning to Nigeria for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

Tinubu warned that the crisis in the Middle East could worsen inflation and affect purchasing power, urging governors to introduce incentives to cushion the impact on energy and transportation costs.

“We should care more for the vulnerable. The Middle East crisis will spike inflation and affect our purchasing power. Labour unions and others will be asking for more support due to the effect of the crisis,” he stated.

The President also urged governors to remain resilient in implementing policies that directly impact citizens and to support efforts to tackle criminal activities across the country.

He commended Vice President Kashim Shettima for visiting Borno State to condole with victims of insecurity and assured residents of stronger protection through new technology.

Speaking on behalf of the governors, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, thanked the President for interventions in states and congratulated him on the successful United Kingdom visit.

AbdulRazaq noted that discussions on state police were ongoing, adding that the Governors’ Forum would forward its recommendations to the National Assembly to provide a legislative framework.
