The flag-off exercise which took place at the Council headquarters, was held in collaboration with the National Commission for Mass Literacy (NMEC), yesterday in Calabar.
According to Anam, in his opening address, the revitalization of adult education and promotion of mass literacy in the metropolis was part of his administration’s blueprint for the educational sector right from inception.
Represented by the Secretary of Council, Elder Comrade Iso Bassey Edim; ACPA, the Mayor said concerted efforts have been made to take the campaign to the nooks and crannies of Calabar Municipality.
He expressed hope that the initiative will encourage the citizenry both the young and old to imbibe the culture of reading and writing; there by checkmating the level of illiteracy while empowering all with employable skills to tackle poverty.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of NMEC, Mr. Sylvester Ikashi said the campaign was aimed at reawakening public interest in adult and non-formal education, providing opportunities for all residents of the metropolis, especially adults who missed formal education to gain essential literacy and life skills.
Earlier, in his remark, the Council’s Supervisor for Education, Chief Eta Ekong Imona, restated the Mayor’s holistic blueprint for the educational subsector in the metropolis, calling on the masses to take advantage of the kind gesture to develop themselves.
