The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources, Upstream, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, has reaffirmed the National Assembly's commitment to strengthening Nigeria's legal and regulatory framework to protect critical petroleum infrastructure, curb crude oil theft and attract greater investment into the country's upstream oil and gas sector.
Williams made the pledge at the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, Governing Board Strategic Retreat held in Isimi, Epe, Lagos State.
He commended the commission for bringing together key stakeholders to deliberate on the future of Nigeria's upstream petroleum industry and the effective implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act.
The senator stated that the Senate Committee remained committed to providing effective legislative oversight and supporting policies aimed at deepening investment, boosting crude oil production, promoting transparency and ensuring the sustainable development of the nation's petroleum resources.
He disclosed that the Senate was currently reviewing the Miscellaneous Offences Act and the Petroleum Production and Distribution, Anti Sabotage, Act as part of efforts to establish a stronger legal framework for the protection of critical oil and gas infrastructure.
According to Williams, the proposed amendments are intended to improve the prosecution of offenders and provide greater legal protection for security personnel and public officials responsible for safeguarding the nation's strategic assets.
He stressed that the realisation of these objectives would require close collaboration with the NUPRC and other stakeholders in the petroleum industry.
The lawmaker noted that the committee looked forward to leveraging the commission's technical expertise and policy insights in developing legislation capable of addressing emerging challenges such as crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, sabotage and other threats facing the sector.
Williams expressed confidence that the retreat would produce practical recommendations that would strengthen regulatory governance, improve industry performance and advance Nigeria's goal of building a more secure, competitive and resilient upstream petroleum sector.
The NUPRC Governing Board Strategic Retreat brought together industry leaders, regulators, policymakers and other stakeholders to review strategic priorities and deepen collaboration aimed at driving sustainable growth in Nigeria's upstream oil and gas industry.
