Relief for Ogoni Community as CEDSI, HYPREP Unveils Water Project in Bomu

Residents of Bomu community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State have received a major boost in access to clean water with the unveiling of the Bomu Water Project by the Center for Development Support Initiatives (CEDSI Nigeria) in partnership with the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).

The initiative, launched ahead of tomorrow’s World Water Day under the theme “Water for Peace,” provides safe, potable water, improves health outcomes, creates economic opportunities, and enhances overall social well-being. For years, residents in Ogoniland have struggled with environmental degradation and poor infrastructure, often walking long distances to fetch water of uncertain quality. The project addresses these challenges by reducing waterborne diseases and easing the daily burden on women and children.

Speaking at the project site, Prof. Mina Ogbanga, Founding Executive Director of CEDSI Nigeria, highlighted the organisation’s role in community engagement and sustainable management of the infrastructure. “Water is more than a resource; it is the foundation of dignity and a catalyst for peace,” she said. “The success of the Bomu Water Project demonstrates what can be achieved when government agencies, civil society, and host communities work together. We are not just building pipelines; we are restoring hope.”

Blessing Chikwendu, Acting Country Manager of CEDSI Nigeria, added, “Despite the challenges, the project has successfully delivered a reliable potable water supply to the community.”

Community leader Zua Lenyie expressed gratitude, emphasizing the positive impact on daily life, while former councillor and Community Liaison Officer Isaac Boulu described the scheme as a “huge relief” and called for strong collaboration with donors to ensure sustainability and maintenance.

The project has already delivered measurable benefits, including improved health, reduced time spent collecting water, expanded educational and economic opportunities, and contributions to the broader environmental remediation of Ogoniland.

CEDSI Nigeria continues to promote sustainable development, environmental justice, and community empowerment, while HYPREP implements the United Nations Environment Programme’s recommendations for Ogoniland restoration. The Bomu Water Project is a model of successful collaboration, showing how access to clean water can restore hope, improve livelihoods, and foster peace in communities affected by environmental challenges.

World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, emphasizes the importance of freshwater, sustainable water management, and universal access to safe water. It highlights responsible use, protection of water resources, and water’s critical role in health, livelihoods, and sustainable development.
