PDP Sets Up 110- Strong Committee For August 2025 National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the formation of a 110-member National Convention Committee to oversee preparations for its 2025 elective National Convention, scheduled for August 28 to August 30, 2025, in Abuja.

The committee’s establishment, ratified by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), marks a significant step toward shaping the PDP’s leadership and strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Convention Committee, chaired by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, includes Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke as Vice Chairman and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah as Secretary.

The committee is tasked with ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process to elect new members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and set the party’s direction for the upcoming elections.

The PDP also inaugurated a 44-member Zoning Committee, led by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, with Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal as Vice Chairman and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary, to determine the allocation of key party positions.

Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum emphasized the critical role of the Zoning Committee in fostering fairness and unity within the party, stating, “The decisions of this committee will be pivotal to our success in 2027.”

The announcement follows the NEC’s approval of the convention dates and committee structures, reflecting the PDP’s commitment to adhering to its constitutional provisions.

The unveiling of the committees comes amid internal challenges, including reported tensions between factions led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike over issues like the National Secretary position.

Despite these divisions, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba dismissed speculations about negotiations to bring back former President Goodluck Jonathan or Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, asserting that the party is focused on internal candidates and unity.

The convention is seen as a make-or-break moment for the PDP, with some NEC members stating that the party’s survival hinges on its outcome.

“The 2025 convention will determine whether we can reposition ourselves as a formidable opposition,” a senior NEC membee said

The party also faces challenges from recent defections and accusations that the NWC is shielding certain bigwigs from disciplinary actions, adding pressure to ensure a smooth and inclusive convention process.
