Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has applauded Cross River State’s rich agricultural potential, pledging to channel fresh investments into the sector as part of his commitment to national development and youth empowerment.

Kwankwaso, who led a delegation on a courtesy visit to Governor Bassey Otu at Government House, Calabar, was received by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, on behalf of the governor.

Recalling his long-standing political and personal ties with Cross River since serving as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1992, Kwankwaso said the state’s fertile land, vast water resources, and favorable climate uniquely position it as a natural hub for agribusiness.

“I chose to be a farmer because whether you are in office or not, you must remain productive. Farming secures food, creates jobs, and builds wealth. I am here with my children so they too can appreciate what it means to invest in agriculture,” the former governor stated.

Responding, Deputy Governor Odey described Kwankwaso’s decision to explore Cross River as an investment destination as both strategic and timely. He emphasized that the Otu administration has prioritized agriculture as a cornerstone of its economic agenda, highlighting the distribution of three million improved oil palm seedlings across all 18 local government areas, the revival of cocoa and coffee cultivation, and the historic introduction of wheat farming, the first in southern Nigeria.

“Cross River is one of Nigeria’s richest agricultural states. From oil palm to cocoa, coffee, and now wheat, our soil is highly productive. We are the safest sub-national for businesses to thrive, and our people are known for their warmth and hospitality. You have come to the right place to invest,” Odey affirmed.

He further disclosed that Cross River will host the Intra-African Trade Fair in 2026, with agriculture and investment at its core, a development he said will cement the state’s position as a continental agricultural hub.

Odey assured Kwankwaso of full government backing, security, and partnership for any ventures he chooses to establish in the state.

“On behalf of Governor Otu and the good people of Cross River, we welcome you wholeheartedly and look forward to forging lasting bonds of friendship and investment with you and your team,” he said.
