Impeachment Saga: Ikom Legislative Council Backs Nsor, Suspends Olulumo Councillor

By Missang AKPET

The Ikom Local Government Legislative Council on Thursday passed a vote of confidence on the Chairman of Ikom Local Government Council, Pastor Mercy Nsor, amid reported moves to impeach her allegedly spearheaded by the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly,Rt Hon Elvert Ayambim.

The vote followed a motion moved by the Leader of the House and Councillor representing Ofutop 2 Ward, Hon. Osim Markpeace, and seconded by the Deputy Leader of the Council and Councillor representing Ikom Urban 2 Ward, Hon. Kasetima Nentui.

Lawmakers, in supporting the motion, cited the chairman’s presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill, describing it as a historic step and noting that she is the first chairman in the history of Ikom Local Government Area to formally present a budget. They said the move reflected ethical leadership, fiscal discipline, and a commitment to structured governance.

The council also commended Nsor’s pragmatic and people centered leadership style, noting her equitable disbursement of funds to councillors, which has enabled them to execute meaningful projects in their respective wards and bring governance closer to the grassroots.

The motion, however, sparked disagreement among members, leading to a brief period of tension during the plenary. Despite the dissent, the motion received majority support, reaffirming the legislative council’s confidence in the chairman.

In a related development, the council suspended the Councillor representing Olulumo Ward, Hon. Linda Ndifon, over allegations of gross misconduct, poor coordination, and insubordination.

The suspension motion was moved by Hon. Kasetima Nentui Ayiba of Ikom Urban 2 Ward and seconded by Hon. Chris Ngari, Councillor representing Abanyom Ward. The council said the decision followed claims that the councillor disrupted proceedings in an unethical manner while plenary was ongoing.
