Ebonyi Gov't Cracks Down On Illegal Schools, Arrests 88 Proprietors

Ebonyi State Government has intensified efforts to tackle substandard education by arresting 88 proprietors and teachers operating unapproved and illegal schools across the state.

The arrests followed a comprehensive inspection exercise conducted by the Ministry of Education, which revealed multiple institutions running without proper accreditation.

Many of the identified schools were found lacking qualified teachers, adequate facilities, and approved curricula. Authorities have consequently ordered the immediate closure of these institutions.

Addressing journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday, the Commissioner for Education (Primary and Secondary), Dr. Donatus Illang, emphasized the necessity of the crackdown to protect the future of children in the state.

“We Cannot Compromise The Future Of Our Children,” Illang declared. “These Schools Pose A Grave Danger To The Education System Because They Fail To Meet The Minimum Requirements For Learning.”

The commissioner explained that those arrested are currently under investigation, with legal proceedings expected to follow. He also issued a stern warning to other proprietors flouting government regulations, affirming that similar measures would be enforced against them.

Illang urged parents to confirm the accreditation status of schools before enrolling their children and encouraged communities to report any suspected illegal learning centres.

To support compliant institutions, the state government has introduced initiatives such as teacher training programs and infrastructure assistance to help schools meet required standards.

Reiterating the administration’s commitment, the commissioner stated that every child in Ebonyi deserves access to quality education in a safe and well-regulated environment.
