Carnival Calabar at 20: Bisong Hails Otu, Describes Celebration as Historic

The Chief Whip of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Dr. Hilary Bisong, has commended Governor Bassey Otu for what he described as a remarkable and historic celebration of the 20th anniversary of Carnival Calabar.
Bisong, who represents Boki 2 State Constituency, said the 2025 edition of Carnival Calabar stood out as a defining moment in the state’s cultural and tourism history, showcasing the rich heritage and vast tourism potential of Cross River State.
In a statement titled Celebrating Excellence: Governor Otu’s December of Culture, Unity, and Growth, made available to The Beagle News, the lawmaker noted that December 2025 was more than a festive season, describing it as a period of transformation and renewed pride for the state.
According to the statement, the Governor’s leadership was evident throughout the celebration, which he described as a world class festival that reaffirmed Cross River State’s position as Nigeria’s leading destination for culture and tourism.
He noted that from upgraded streets and festive Christmas lighting to visible security presence and detailed planning, the administration demonstrated leadership anchored on vision, care, and purpose. He added that residents felt valued, proud, and reconnected to their state.
Bisong described the 20th anniversary of Carnival Calabar as historic in every sense, noting that for 32 days the state came alive with music, colour, and cultural expression. He said the carnival bands delivered energetic performances, hospitality services rose to the occasion, and cultural displays reflected the government’s strong support for the creative sector.
He also praised Governor Otu for promoting unity by bringing together former governors to celebrate two decades of Carnival Calabar. According to him, the gesture underscored the importance of respecting history and fostering collaboration, while reinforcing the carnival as a symbol of the state’s shared heritage and identity.
Beyond the celebrations, the lawmaker highlighted the economic benefits of the carnival, noting that micro, small, and medium scale enterprises thrived, artisans accessed new opportunities, hotels recorded high patronage, and thousands of jobs were created.
Bisong said Carnival Calabar 2025 demonstrated that culture is not merely entertainment but a driver of enterprise, empowerment, and economic growth, adding that Cross River State emerged as a hub of opportunity, creativity, and excellence.
He commended Governor Otu for his vision, courage, and commitment to the people of the state, stating that December 2025 reminded Cross Riverians of their unity, strength, and limitless potential.
According to him, Cross River State did not just celebrate during the carnival season but rose to new heights.
