Akwa Ibom Unveils 10-year Electricity Reform Plan to Power Every Household By 2034
Gov. Eno

Akwa Ibom State has launched an ambitious 10-year electricity reform plan aimed at providing stable and quality power to all households by 2034. Governor Umo Eno announced the initiative on Friday at the conclusion of the state’s first-ever Electricity Summit, held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene.

According to a statement from the Government House press unit, the governor highlighted that the success of the plan relies on collaboration among the state, private investors, federal agencies, and residents.

“We have listened. We have learned. And we will act. But let me stress this: success will not come from government alone,” Eno said.

“By 2034, God willing, every household in Akwa Ibom will have quality electricity service. And we will build a model for electricity reform in Nigeria.”

Two key institutions will be established to drive the reforms: the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulation Commission (AKSERC) to oversee tariffs, licensing, and compliance, and the Akwa Ibom State Electrification Agency (AISEA) to expand access to underserved towns and villages. The governor disclosed that the boards of these agencies will be constituted within one month.

He further announced plans to rehabilitate and commercialise Ibom Power Company, raise capital for urgent repairs, and establish the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Distribution Company. These steps, he noted, will create a competitive electricity market where the state retains majority control.

In a push for cleaner energy, Eno revealed that renewable projects would also be piloted, with a target of generating at least 20 percent of future power from solar and other green sources.

“These are not distant promises; they are immediate, measurable, and achievable within the next 24 months or less,” he assured.

The governor urged qualified professionals to apply for technical roles through the ARISE Employment Portal, stressing that recruitment will be merit-based and devoid of political influence.

The Akwa Ibom roadmap comes months after President Bola Tinubu ratified the National Integrated Electricity Policy.

The policy aims to attract over $122 billion in investments and diversify Nigeria’s power mix between now and 2045.

For Akwa Ibom, the new reform plan symbolizes more than just power generation; it is a vision to boost industrial growth, support small businesses, and improve living standards across the state.
