A Festive Season of Purposeful Leadership: Commending Governor Bassey Edet Otu
Anthony EKPO BASSEY
The recent Christmas season in Cross River State unfolded as a vivid reminder of what purposeful governance can achieve when leadership is people-focused, culturally conscious and forward-looking. Governor Bassey Edet Otu deserves commendation for steering an eventful yuletide period that not only rekindled the festive spirit but also reinforced the state’s enduring identity as Nigeria’s foremost tourist destination and the people’s paradise.
From the onset of the celebrations, the atmosphere across the state, particularly in Calabar, reflected deliberate planning and commitment to excellence. The clean and green environment stood out, with regular waste evacuation which ensured that streets, public spaces and major corridors remained welcoming to residents and visitors alike. This attention to environmental sanitation reaffirmed Cross River State’s long-held reputation for cleanliness and orderliness, qualities that continue to attract tourists from within and outside the country.
A defining highlight of the season was the lighting of major roads across the city of Calabar. Beyond enhancing the city’s aesthetic appeal, the illuminated streets improved security, extended economic activities into the evening hours and added a festive glow that complemented the Christmas mood. These visible improvements underscored the administration’s resolve to make the state safe, vibrant and attractive.
Also, interesting to note, was Governor Otu’s decision to provide free bus rides for residents and visitors across different parts of the state, which was another thoughtful intervention. At a time when transportation costs remain a burden for many Nigerians, this gesture eased movement, encouraged participation in social and cultural events and projected an image of a caring government that understands the daily realities of its people. The influx of visitors who enjoyed seamless mobility further boosted local commerce and hospitality businesses during the holidays.
Equally commendable was the declaration of holidays for civil servants, coupled with the payment of bonuses and other incentives. These measures not only lifted morale within the public service but also acknowledged the contributions of workers to the machinery of governance. The largesse enjoyed by political appointees, while symbolic, reinforced a culture of appreciation and collective responsibility within government circles.
Perhaps most symbolic of unity and institutional respect was the honour accorded to former governors Clement Ebri, Donald Duke, Liyel Imoke and Ben Ayade. By recognising the roles played by past leaders in shaping the state, Governor Otu sent a profound message about continuity, respect for legacy and the importance of building on existing foundations rather than erasing them. This gesture resonated deeply with many citizens who value harmony and inclusive leadership.
Strikingly, the carnival celebrations added colour, rhythm and renewed global attention to the season, and showcased Cross River State’s rich cultural heritage, creative energy and capacity to host world-class events, and furthered reinforced Calabar’s status as Nigeria’s carnival capital and a prime destination for tourism and leisure.
As the festivities wind down, it is clear that the Christmas outings were more than mere celebrations; they were a strategic reaffirmation of Cross River State’s brand as a hub of tourism, culture and good living. However, the challenge ahead lies in sustaining this momentum. Clean environments must be maintained beyond festive seasons, infrastructure improvements should be continuous, and policies that ease the cost of living and promote social welfare must become enduring features of governance.
Governor Bassey Edet Otu has set a commendable tone. With sustained commitment, inclusive policies and consistent execution, Cross River State can not only retain its status as Nigeria’s tourism capital but also deepen its reputation as a place where governance truly serves the people.
