2027: Defections Surge in C'River as Otu Links Influx to Confidence in APC

By Benjamin GBOR

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has linked the surge of defections into the All Progressives Congress to increasing public trust in the party’s leadership and its ability to address Nigeria’s challenges.

The governor made the remark while welcoming thousands of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party across the seven local government areas of Cross River South at a rally in Calabar.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, Otu described the development as a strong endorsement of his administration and the governing party at both state and national levels, including support for President Bola Tinubu.

He said the growing number of new entrants into the APC reflects confidence in the administration’s policies and its commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy.

“The rising wave of defections into the All Progressives Congress shows that our efforts in governance are being recognized. It is a sign that the people believe in the direction of this administration and the party,” he said.

Otu praised the defectors for their decision, describing it as courageous and timely. He assured them that the APC remains an inclusive platform that guarantees equal opportunities for all members, regardless of when they join.

According to him, the government will continue to implement people focused programmes aimed at improving the welfare of residents across the state.

The defectors, numbering over 2,000, came from several local government areas including Akpabuyo, Calabar Municipality, Odukpani and Biase. They formally pledged allegiance to the APC and declared support for the governor and the party’s leadership.

A former Vice Chairman of Biase Local Government, who also contested for the House of Representatives seat for Akamkpa Biase Federal Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election, spoke on behalf of the group.

He said their defection was driven by confidence in Otu’s performance and a shared belief in what he described as progressive and result oriented leadership.

According to him, the movement cuts across party lines and communities and is aimed at strengthening the APC structure ahead of future elections.

“We have resolved to join the APC in large numbers to contribute to its growth and success at all levels,” he said.

Also addressing the gathering, the Cross River APC Chairman, Rt Hon Sunny Etta, said the influx of new members underscores the party’s growing dominance in the state.

He noted that the entry of members from other political parties, including the ADC, reflects increasing confidence in the APC’s leadership and governance style.

Etta urged the defectors to remain loyal and committed, stressing that political participation should be guided by collective interest and development rather than personal gain.

Party leaders at the rally assured the new members of seamless integration into the APC, as efforts continue to strengthen the party’s foothold in Cross River ahead of future political contests.
