In a major move to tackle the South-South region’s electricity deficit, the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). The landmark agreement, formalized over the weekend at REA’s Abuja headquarters, aims to expand power access to underserved communities and drive sustainable socio-economic development.

Speaking at the ceremony, SSDC Managing Director and CEO, Ms. Usoro Akpabio, hailed the partnership as a strategic milestone for regional growth. “Electricity is the backbone of development. Without reliable power, meaningful progress remains out of reach. This collaboration will enhance productivity, create jobs, and improve living standards across the South-South zone,” she said.

REA’s Managing Director and CEO, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, described the MoU as a framework for bridging the electricity gap in rural and peri-urban areas. He praised SSDC’s proactive leadership and highlighted the importance of innovative funding mechanisms beyond government subventions to ensure sustainable project delivery.

Sir Marcus Nle Eji, SSDC’s Executive Director of Projects, assured REA of the Commission’s unwavering commitment, pledging full support for all joint initiatives.

Analysts say the partnership signals a significant step towards addressing long-standing power challenges in the region, positioning the South-South for accelerated growth and improved quality of life for its residents.
