Rowdy Session in Senate Over Nigeria's Worsening Security Situation

There was a rowdy session at the Senate yesterday as lawmakers engaged in verbal exchanges over the worsening security situation in the country. Some senators expressed fear that the nation was becoming "unsafe" and the citizens were losing faith in government's ability to protect its citizenry citing recent cases of kidnapping and killings in many parts of the country.

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, regretted the escalating violence and suggested that the country should seek broader support. "We should seek assistance from overseas, urging collaboration with global partners to stem the crisis. We hope that our country will overcome the present security challenges." He said.

Also speaking, Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, said the current wave of attacks was a defining moment for the nation and warned that business as usual could lead to catastrophe. While urging the Senate to examine its internal systems, he expressed disatisfaction with the Senate committee on Security and Intelligence.

Echoing his opinion, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe charged the present government to accept responsibility for its inadequacies and should desist from blaming previous administrations for the insecurity in the land.

The Senate Chambers became more rowdying and almost uncontrollable, when Senator Seriake Dickson stated that: "Nigeria was losing prestige and integrity" owing to frequent attacks on innocent citizens and blamed the majority caucus for treating the issue with levity instead of rising up to address the situation. His statement angered his colleagues of the All Progressive Congress.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, expressed optimism that the country will overcome its security challenges and blamed intelligence failures and internal sabotage as some of the factors crippling the efforts of security agencies.
