Rohr Demands Action on South Africa Sanction

Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has criticised FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for delaying a decision on the potential three-point deduction against South Africa in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The sanction, if enforced, stems from allegations that Bafana Bafana fielded ineligible player Teboho Mokoena in their 2-0 win over Lesotho in March. However, months later, football’s governing bodies have yet to issue a verdict, leaving Group C standings in limbo.
Rohr, a former Super Eagles coach, voiced his frustration after Benin’s 1-0 victory over Zimbabwe, stressing that the uncertainty is unfair to other teams battling for qualification.
“South Africa won against Lesotho, but the match that matters is the first leg, where they have to lose the three points. The rules are very clear, yet FIFA and CAF haven’t decided. It is not normal,” Rohr said.
He added that the delay could alter the group’s dynamics. “We have 11 points after this win. If South Africa loses three points, we will only be two points behind them. What are they waiting for? It is incomprehensible.”
Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Rwanda are all closely monitoring the outcome, as the decision could significantly shape their qualification hopes.
