Reasons Why I'm Fighting Nyesom Wike- Gov Makinde
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has explained the reasons for his disagreement with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Makinde noted that Wike’s methods suggest a preference for a one-party system, which contradicts the principles envisioned by Nigeria’s founding fathers.
According to Daily Post, the governor made it clear that the disagreement is not personal, but rather about the future and health of democracy in Nigeria.
Discussing the ongoing tensions in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the clashes at the Abuja national secretariat on Tuesday, Makinde encouraged party members nationwide. He remarked, “This concerns the survival of democracy. It may get worse before it gets better, but if it takes staying here for two weeks to protect democracy, we will do so.”
When asked about his differences with Wike, Makinde recalled their history as allies and members of the G5 prior to the 2023 general election.
He stressed that attention should be on principles, not personalities, stating, “Small minds talk about people. Average minds talk about events. We talk about issues.”
According to the governor, the main issue is preserving a multi-party system that gives Nigerians real choices in elections, rather than allowing one party to dominate.
Makinde’s remarks reflect a strong commitment to democratic ideals and the necessity of offering Nigerians alternatives in governance.
He also emphasized that the PDP crisis is more than an internal party dispute, framing it as a critical effort to protect Nigeria’s democracy. The governor called for a focus on broader issues rather than personal grudges or historical alliances
