OPINION: WE ARE PDP, BUT SUPPORTING PRESIDENT TINUBU IN 2027 ELECTION
By Joe Obi Ability-Bisong
It is no longer news that the leader of our faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. And we have resolved to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election while still actively contesting other elective positions under our PDP platform across the country.
This position is not taken lightly. It is rooted in a pragmatic reading of Nigeria’s political realities and the need to prioritize stability, governance, and political relevance. Support for President Tinubu at the presidential level reflects a recognition of ongoing collaboration between the Federal Government and stakeholders in the Federal Capital Territory, as well as the belief that constructive engagement can yield tangible benefits for our people.
At the same time, our commitment to democratic participation remains firm. The PDP structure within our fold will continue to contest and compete vigorously for governorships, National Assembly seats, and other elective offices in 2027. Our political engagement at these levels remains strong, and we are confident that our grassroots support will translate into meaningful victories.
It is also important to acknowledge the ongoing realignments within the opposition space. Some politicians who are now heading toward the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are individuals who held significant power during the PDP’s 16 years in government. Many of them served as governors, ministers, and key party leaders during that era. While their contributions are part of the party’s history, it is also true that many of the internal challenges and divisions that weakened the PDP originated during that same period.
Our position is simple: the future of the party can not be built on endless recriminations. Those who have chosen another political path are free to do so. They can build their new platform as they deem fit, just as we will continue the work of rebuilding and strengthening our own political structures.
We believe renewal sometimes requires a clear break from the past. The PDP must evolve, and the responsibility for that evolution now lies with those who remain committed to rebuilding from within.
Let them build without us. We will build without them.
In the end, time and the judgment of the people — and indeed Providence — will determine which path serves the nation best.
