Residents of Wamba in Nasarawa State have been praised for their swift and compassionate response after rescuing a newborn baby boy abandoned in the Small London area of the town on Sunday.
The infant, believed to be only a few hours old, was found wrapped in worn cloth and left by the roadside. His faint cries drew the attention of early morning church goers who rushed to secure his safety.
Confirming the incident, the Adon Garin Wamba, Mohammed Zaharadeen, said the baby was immediately taken into safe custody and handed over to the appropriate authorities for urgent medical care.
Zaharadeen commended the timely intervention of residents, describing their action as a reflection of the community's empathy and shared responsibility to protect vulnerable lives.
“The people of Wamba acted with conscience and kindness. Their intervention saved a life and displayed the values we stand for as a community,” he said.
The discovery left many residents shocked and emotional, with several expressing disbelief that a newborn could be abandoned. Community members offered prayers for the child's wellbeing, while health workers began necessary checks to stabilise him.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for greater public awareness and support systems for distressed mothers, as cases of infant abandonment continue to cause concern in some communities.
Local authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the act and identify those responsible.
