A Nigeria Premier Football League fixture in Katsina was marred by violence on Saturday when a pitch invader attacked Barau FC midfielder, Nana Abraham, moments after he scored a crucial equaliser.

The dramatic incident unfolded during the 1–1 draw between Katsina United and Barau FC at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium. Abraham had levelled the game in the 69th minute when an unidentified individual ran onto the field and slashed him near the neck with a sharp object.

Barau FC’s Media Director, Ahmad Gwale, confirmed the attack, expressing shock at how easily the assailant gained access to the pitch.

“It happened right after our goal. A man rushed onto the pitch and assaulted our player with what seemed to be a sharp object,” Gwale stated.

Photos and videos circulating online captured the disturbing moment Abraham was left bleeding on the pitch as teammates, match officials and medical personnel hurried to his aid. He was immediately substituted and taken for medical attention.

The club later confirmed that Abraham is receiving treatment and is expected to recover.

The violent scene has once again raised concerns about safety at NPFL match venues. The incident comes barely months after Plateau United’s Vincent Temitope was also attacked by a fan during a league game in Lafia.

Football stakeholders and supporters have renewed calls for a clampdown on pitch invasions, tighter stadium security and firm sanctions to deter crowd violence during domestic league matches.
