Ivory Coast Make World Cup History with First-Ever Knockout Stage Qualification

Ivory Coast have broken their World Cup jinx, reaching the round of 32 for the first time after a 2-0 win over Curacao in Group E.

They needed only a point to advance after three straight group-stage exits. Nicolas Pepe eased the pressure early, tapping in after seven minutes when Yan Diomande dispossessed Curacao’s defence. The former Arsenal forward doubled the lead on 65 minutes with a left-footed strike into the top corner past Eloy Room.

The result takes the Elephants to six points and second in Group E. It also marks the first time Ivory Coast have won two matches at a World Cup finals.

*End of a 20-year wait*

The current squad have done what the golden generation of Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure could not. Ivory Coast first qualified in 2006, but were undone by a brutal group with Argentina and the Netherlands. In 2010 under Sven-Goran Eriksson, draws with Portugal and a win over North Korea still weren’t enough. The cruelest blow came in 2014, when a 93rd-minute goal to Greece saw them fall 2-1 on the final day.

Missing the last two World Cups only added pressure. But this team, light on big names but heavy on spirit, have finally cleared the group stage hurdle.

Ivory Coast now turn to the knockout rounds, with a chance to write the next chapter 20 years after their World Cup debut.
